A positive start for David Philippaerts who, while waiting to make his debut in the World Championship series in Qatar on 2 March, started his season in the opening round of the Internazionali d’Italia.
After spending a month in the mountains to work on his fitness, David donned the AGV AX-8 helmet bearing the Team Honda Gariboldi colours to take part in the race. This year he will be riding a CRF 450 and on this first event he came home 4th in the MX1 class and 6th in the Elite.
“After a six month break, it was not easy to race again on such a demanding track" explained DP19, "the sand was very deep and there was no room for mistakes. Physically I feel fine and only had a few problems with my forearms in the second heat because I pushed too hard in the early part of the race but overall my resistance is quite acceptable. The race was also a good test run for my bike which performed very well even if there are still a few things we need to work on to get her perfect".
The French rider Paulin Gautier did not race as he was busy training in France. The official TM riders also wore AGV AX-8 Evo helmets and brand new Dainese off-road clothing. The Scottish rider Shaun Simpson had to retire with technical problems in the MX1 round but came home 10th in the Elite while Ivo Monticelli finished in a well-earned 4th place in the MX2.
